📄【Prescription Looks Like Alien Code? 😭 30-Second Guide to Reading SPH/CYL/AXIS!】
Newbie-Friendly Eye Test Decoding Tutorial
Every day people show me their prescriptions and go:
“What even is this language???”
Don’t worry – today I’ll teach you everything in one go. After this, you’ll be buying contacts and glasses like a pro!
🔍 The MOST Important Column: SPH (Sphere)
“–” = Myopia (nearsighted)
-2.50 → 250 degrees myopia
-6.00 → 600 degrees (the bigger the number, the stronger)
“+” = Hyperopia (farsighted, pretty rare)
+1.50 → 150 degrees hyperopia
🔍 Second Most Important: CYL (Astigmatism)
Blank or “0.00” = No astigmatism, lucky you!
Any number = You have astigmatism
-0.75 → Mild
-2.50 → Quite strong (things look wavy/distorted)
🔍 AXIS (Astigmatism Angle)
A number from 1–180° that shows the direction of your astigmatism
(You don’t need to overthink it, just copy it exactly when ordering)
🔍 PD (Pupillary Distance)
Distance between the centers of your pupils (usually 58–68 mm)
Super important for online glasses – wrong PD = instant headache!
Super Easy Memory Trick:
SPH → Look at + or – and the number = myopia/hyperopia strength
CYL → Any number = astigmatism exists
AXIS & PD → Must-match numbers when buying glasses
After reading this, your prescription will feel like plain English! 📖✨
